You have two main ways to create TikTok videos. You can film them within the app and publish them directly or create them separately and upload them. Both are simple enough to do; it’s the creative side of the process that’s the hard bit!

Creating within TikTok has an advantage in that the app has a massive library of music for you to use. All of it is available for use within the app and can be freely synced or edited as you need. You can also use your own music loaded onto your phone to create your 15 seconds of fame.

Creating outside of TikTok is also straightforward, but you have to provide your own music. The advantage here is that you can edit with a lot more freedom on a computer than you can on a phone. That’s even more true if you know your way around an audio editing suite.

I’m going to concentrate on working within TikTok, as that’s how most of us will use the app.

How do I add Music to a TikTok?

Assuming you have the music already on your phone, you just need TikTok installed, an account, and a little free time. One of the neatest things about TikTok is that lip-syncing is simple. Once you know the words to the song and have a copy of it, you just need a mirror and a little practice to sort out timing, and you’re good to go. If you can add some creative flourishes to that video while you’re recording, all the better!

Open TikTok and select the ‘+’ icon to create a new video.

Select “Sound” at the top of the screen to open the audio menu.

Select the song and select the checkmark.

Preview a song from within the TikTok audio library until you find a track you like.

Select the “Red Record” button and prepare yourself to record the video.

Press the “Record” button, do your lip-sync, and complete the video.

Finish Editing

Next, you can upload the video just as you normally would. Use the effects in the sidebar if you like. Once you’ve added your effects, select the checkmark once you’re happy with the video or Reshoot if you’re not.

Edit your video in the next screen using the tools in the menus. Select “Next” when you’re happy with your video. On the final page you can add a title, caption, and any hashtags.

TikTok gives you the option to save as a draft, or to set the privacy option to ‘public’ or ‘friends only’.

Once your video is perfect, select Post.

How do I Add my Own Music to TikTok?

Adding your own music to TikTok may seem tricky at first, but with a simple tool called “BeeCut” you can spruce up your videos with any kind of music you want. You won’t be limited to TikTok’s library anymore which can give your video that edge to help you gain more followers and fans.

BeeCut/LightMV (Win & Mac)

BeeCut is a video editor that can be used to put your own music on a TikTok video. Available on both the desktop and app, it’s a super useful tool that supports videos in an aspect ratio of 9:16 – aka the ratio TikTok supports. BeeCut isn’t just useful in order to add music, it can also be used to add special effects, filters, slow the video down, speed the video up, add stickers, and much much more.

  1. Download BeeCut by going to their website, or by downloading the app on your Android or OS device. The app is called “LightMV,” even though it’s the same software as BeeCut.
  2. Open BeeCut, then import your audio and video clips by clicking the “Media” area.
  3. Under “File,” select “New Project” then “9:16 (Portrait)” to start editing your video.
  4. Drag files to the editing area. You can modify the video further in this area but makes sure the duration for the video and audio are similar, so one doesn’t cut the other off.
  5. You can add filters and designs before you complete the video.
  6. Save it to your computer by clicking the “Export” button.
  7. Go back to the TikTok app and click the “+” button.
  8. Select “Upload” in the bottom left-hand corner; select your video from your “Gallery.”
  9. You can choose to edit the video more within TikTok.
  10. Select “Next” and add hashtags, a title, and a caption.
  11. Select “Post.”

You can even add a soundtrack to TikTok if you want that “post-production” feel for your videos.

How do I put music on my Tik Tok on my iPhone or Android?

The process is very similar to how you would upload a TikTok video on the desktop. Instead of using BeeCut, you would use LightMV. LightMV is the same software as BeeCut, the main difference is that it’s just an app version available on your phone.

LightMV/BeeCut (Android & OS)

LightMV is a video editor that can be used to put your own music on a TikTok video. Available on both the desktop and app (desktop is called “BeeCut”), it’s a super useful tool that supports videos in an aspect ratio of 9:16 – aka the ratio TikTok supports. Light MV specializes in making slideshows mostly, but you can also add music, templates, pictures, and effects.

  1. Download the LightMV app on your Android or OS device.
  2. Create an account on LightMV.com.
  3. Open LightMV, select the “TikTok” template.
  4. Follow the instructions to add photos and videos.
  5. Select “Change Music.” This lets you upload your own music.
  6. You can add filters and designs before you complete the video.
  7. Save it to your phone by clicking the “Produce” button.
  8. The video will take some time to process. You can choose to add an e-mail to notify you when it’s complete.
  9. Go back to the TikTok app and click the “+” button.
  10. Select “Upload” in the bottom left-hand corner.
  11. You can choose to edit the video more within TikTok.
  12. Select “Next” and add hashtags, a title, and a caption.
  13. Select “Post.”

The mechanics of creating a video and adding music in TikTok is very straightforward but there is a lot more to it. Timing is everything, and you will likely find that to begin with, you need to adjust the audio and video timing to match up. Expect to reshoot a couple of times until you get the hang of how it all works.

‘My Sounds’ Not Available

Due to copyright issues, TikTok has begun limiting people’s ability to add sounds to their videos. This can be an issue for you if the app glitches out or recognize you and your friend singing a song you made up as copyrighted music.

There is a way around this. You can add TikTok approved music or sounds from within the app. During the video editing stage, set the ‘additional sounds’ slider to zero. This means that your audio content will play normally while the sounds you’ve added won’t, bypassing TikTok’s copyright detection.

For other issues, make sure that you have a good internet connection and the app is up-to-date. If TikTok appears unavailable or isn’t letting you perform certain tasks, this is usually the culprit.

The song says “unknown” and I really want to change it. I want to put a title but it doesn’t allow me even if I put the song there myself
