How to Backup WhatsApp Messages on iPhone

iOS handles backups differently than Android. The lack of well-defined local storage is something that confuses some users. Especially those that have recently switched to iOS. When talking WhatsApp messages and how to save them if you’re an iPhone user, things are much simpler than you think.

The Standard Method

By default, WhatsApp doesn’t store messages on its servers, so it’s impossible to retrieve any you might have deleted. That’s why it’s best to back up your conversations, just in case you might need to get access to information.

Unfortunately, unlike with Android phones, iPhones don’t have native support to store WhatsApp messages locally. That means that you have to use the iCloud service to save your chat history.

You need to follow a few simple steps to do that manually.

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app.

  2. Go to the Settings menu.
  3. Go to the Chats tab.
  4. Select Chat Backup.
  5. Select the Back Up Now option.

That will begin the backup process. Of course, you can also automate it. That’s helpful as it won’t affect your backups if you suddenly forget to initiate them yourself.

  1. Launch the WhatsApp app.
  2. Go to the Settings menu.
  3. Go to the Chats tab.
  4. Select Chat Backup.
  5. Tap on the Auto Backup option.

You can also customize this feature and select whether to save videos, too, or only texts.

Note that before doing any of this, you need to make sure that your iCloud Drive is on. Also, be sure to sign in to the app with your Apple ID.

It is risky to do this if you’re not using your iPhone on a trusted WiFi network. Due to backup files being big, it’s possible to get too much mobile data usage when turning on the Auto Backup feature.

How to Retrieve Chat History

So you have your chat history backups now. How do you get access to them? In case you have severe issues with your iPhone, you could always restore your phone from an older backup. That will also bring back your WhatsApp chats if you backed them up on iCloud.

Alternatively, you can check your iCloud to look for any stored messages.

How to Export Chat History

You can export your chat history and email it to yourself. That way, you can use your inbox to store your WhatsApp chats and circumnavigate backups.

  1. Bring up a chat that you want to save.
  2. Tap on the group subject.
  3. Tap the Export Chat button.

  4. Decide if you want to include any shared media files.
  5. Launch the Mail app.
  6. Type in your email address.
  7. Tap the Send button.

Why Is iCloud the Only Method?

iCloud offers users encrypted backups and 2TB of storage, for a fee, of course. Only the first 5GB is free.

This option is very convenient as it only requires a WiFi connection. Since this is pretty much available anywhere, it grants users more freedom to create and restore backups whenever they want.

Of course, iCloud is not the only method. You can use a computer to back up your iPhone, and this also includes conversations from your WhatsApp account. But, it’s not as convenient as it will always require a connection to another device and sufficient storage capacity.

Some third-party apps can act as intermediaries. You can use some of these apps to bypass the traditional iCloud backup and directly send saved chats to your computer.

However, we don’t recommend using them for a couple of reasons. First of all, not all apps are free. And, since there are no real guarantees, you could end up wasting your money.

Secondly, as with all third-party apps that try to change the way your OS should work, it’s possible to end up with corrupted files, run into incompatibility issues, and so on.

Lastly, iCloud storage is pretty safe and offers plenty of room for you to keep your files. Besides, it doesn’t depend on other gadgets for creating a quick backup.

Do You Like the Idea of Cloud Storage?

Let’s face it – most everyday people aren’t targets of hackers. So, the chances are that your data is safe in the iCloud. Although some backups may take time to create and upload, it’s nice to have so much storage capacity at your disposal from anywhere.

Let us know in the comments section below if you keep your WhatsApp on automatic backup or if you create one when you need it. Also, share with us your thoughts on iCloud’s security.
