The Best WhatsApp Text Tricks

It is always surprising when you use an app like WhatsApp almost every day, only to discover some new functions that you never knew existed. Hopefully, you will enjoy that pleasure today as this article explores some cool WhatsApp text tricks, and a few WhatsApp functions that you may not have heard about.

Bold, Strike-Through, Monospace and Italics

If you highlight a piece of text, you can tap the “More” option, and you’ll get the bold, strike-through, monospace, and italics options.

Some devices do not have the “More” option. In that case, you may use different symbols to show you want a word written in bold, strike-through, monospace, and italics.

Different font types

For bold, you must use the asterisk symbol before the text and after it. For Italics, you should use an underscore before and after the text you want italicizing. The tilde symbol is used before and after the text to create the strike-through effect. To have words written as monospace, you must add three grave accents.

Grave accent (`)

tilde (~)

underscore (_)

asterisk (*)

Reply to a Single Message Point

Let’s say that you are chatting with somebody over WhatsApp, and that person writes a series of things at once. You may want to address a single message point with your reply directly. You may do this by tapping the message and tapping “Reply.”

Then, at the top of the screen, you will see a series of symbols. Tap the arrow that’s pointing to the left.

Reply to certain part of a message

That will bring up the highlighted part of the message when you start writing your reply. The other person will then know what part of the message you are replying to. Write your message, and it will appear under a small box containing the exact piece of text you are responding to.

Change Your Font Size

It is possible to alter the text of your messages to a larger or smaller font. This only works for your device. For example, if you set your WhatsApp text font to very large, then it only appears very large on your screen. It will not carry over to your recipient.

Open WhatsApp and tap the settings icon in the top right. Scroll down the menu and tap on “Settings.” In the settings menu, tap the “Chats” function. You will see further options, one of which says “Font Size” and then tells you what font size you are using. Tap the “Font Size” header and change your font size to whatever you desire.

Add Text to the Images

If you are sending an image over Whatsapp, then you probably know all about the pencil tool that lets you write on the pictures you send. However, there’s another option not many people know about – the Text function.

Adding text to images

Go to WhatsApp and press the Paperclip icon at the bottom of the screen. Then, choose to add a picture from your gallery. Go to your image gallery and select the image you wish to use. Once you have picked your image, a small set of icons will run along the top of the WhatsApp screen. Press the icon that looks like a capital “T.” You may now add your text and adjust its color. Add your caption to the WhatsApp message, and then press the green button to send the message.

Stop the Preview Text

When somebody sends you a WhatsApp message, a notification appears on your phone’s Home screen. It will tell you who sent the message, and it will show you a portion of the text.

That’s all great unless somebody is sending you messages that you would not want other people to see accidentally. For example, if you put your phone down at your nan’s house, and your partner sends you a racy text, you probably don’t want the preview on your phone’s Home screen.

Stopping these previews is easy enough. Launch WhatsApp, but do not go into a conversation, stay at the starting screen where you can see your contacts. Tap the three vertical dots icon in the top right corner of the screen. Find the “Settings” function and tap it. Then tap the “Notifications” option, which will bring up your notifications settings. From here, you can turn off previews.

Some phones have a toggle switch that says, “Preview Notifications.” Others may have something an option like “Use High Priority Notifications.” Tap the button or toggle switch to disable previews.

Find Old Messages

WhatsApp stores your messages, and a lot of them. There is a good chance that the company will save them for as long as you use WhatsApp. They will only delete your messages if you go 30 days without opening WhatsApp once. In that case, they will start deleting your old messages.

There seems to be some confusion as to if WhatsApp stores your images and texts on their servers, but it is clear they are saving them somewhere because you can retrieve very old photos and text.

Regardless, you can search through your old messages with the search bar at the top of the WhatsApp screen. It is especially handy if there is some pertinent information, such as a website link, and you would like to retrieve it.

Bookmarks

You can highlight a single point/ piece of text within a WhatsApp conversation by pressing on it. You may then tap the star icon at the top of the screen. That way, you’ll put that particular piece of text into your bookmarks so that you may more easily find it in the future.
