How To Calculate and Increase Your Tinder Elo Score

For years Tinder used the famous Elo score system to rank its users by the level of attractiveness. Yes, Tinder once basically tried to match people who are equal in “hotness” according to many theories.

This score, also known as the “desirability score” used a specific algorithm to rank you among the Tinder users. If your Elo score was high, you would get more matches. Likewise, you would be matched with users that also had a high Elo score.

However, Tinder abolished the Elo score system and introduced an improved algorithm some time ago. It uses slightly different parameters to match users. Even if most of these factors are the same, the Elo score is officially no more.

In this article, we will talk about the algorithm and what you can change about your profile to increase your chances of getting good matches.

How to Tell What Your Score Is Now

The first step to increasing your score is understanding where you’re at right now. Unlike a Snapchat Score, Tinder doesn’t make it easy, there’s no number at the top of your profile letting you know how attractive and desirable the app thinks you are (this is probably a really good thing in retrospect).

Who’s in Your Deck?

First, navigate to your Tinder deck and begin to compare the profiles you’re seeing.

Do you have a lot of repetitive matches showing up? Either you’re in a small town or you need to boost your score because it’s a little on the low side.

How Many Likes Do You Get?

If you’re receiving a lot of likes you have a higher score. These likes mean you’re being seen by more people and therefore you’re ranking high on the “desirable” meter.

How Often Do You Use the App?

According to a press release from Tinder in 2019, one of the best ways to increase your score is to use the app. From this, we can deduce that our scores are lower if we’re inconsistent users of the service.

Could You Calculate Your Elo Score?

Tinder never clarified what was the Elo score exactly. So, even if you did everything by the book, you could never know what your exact desirability score was. The only way you could measure your score was to look at other profiles on your feed.

Tinder

If most of the profiles that you could swipe early on were attractive, you probably had a high score. Also, if it took a long time until there were no new people left, it meant you had a higher score.

Since the new algorithm and previous desirability score share a lot of parameters, the situation has not changed much.

What to Do to Increase Your Score?

There are plenty of variables you should consider while building up your Tinder score. These are some of the most important.

Be Active

The most important parameter for your rank is your Tinder activity. It doesn’t matter if your profile is set up perfectly. If you are not using it, you will not appear among high-ranking profiles.

If you don’t use it at all, you will rarely appear on anybody’s feed. You have to be visible to other Tinder users before you reach a high rank.

No Swipe-Spamming

If you spam your swiping to the right, as if you would match with almost anyone, you will decrease your score. The logic is simple – if you’re open to anything, you don’t require a high rank and upper tier of profiles.

Also, if you swipe-spam too frequently, Tinder can lock your feed for 12 hours. This can also negatively impact the algorithm.

The best way to handle this is to swipe both sides. However, you should only swipe right if you find a person attractive. This way the algorithm will rank you higher and match you with profiles that also maintain some standards.

Say Hi to Your Matches

If you match with other Tinder users and then leave them hanging, it will reflect negatively on your rank. This means that you aren’t playing the Tinder game seriously, so somebody else should gain priority. Of course, this is only for those who don’t have many matches, to begin with. If you have plenty of matches, you don’t need to talk to each one.

Don’t Reset Your Account

As things stand, if you reset your account often, Tinder will decrease your score. So, if you feel like your account requires a reset due to a glitch or bug, you should do it. But if you reset your account to start over from scratch, you’ll tank your ranking.

So, while it can still be a necessity, you should look to reset the account as the final resort.

Make Your Profile Attractive

The first rule of Tinder is to be attractive. You don’t have to be the best-looking person around, but you can polish your profile enough to interest other users. Make adjustments to your bio, pick the best-looking photo that you have, and single yourself out from the crowd.

Your rank depends heavily on other people swiping your profile right. You have to give them a reason to try and match with you.

How Different Is the New Ranking System?

As you can see, the Elo score and the new ranking system are almost the same. Despite Tinder officially announcing it as a completely different thing, there’s nothing to suggest that’s the case.

Does Tinder Gold increase my score?

Not officially. Considering what we do know about Tinder’s algorithm, the Gold subscription may increase your score as you’ll be more likely to use the app and more likely to interact with others because you can see who liked you. Outside of that, paid users don’t get a boost for subscribing.

How does Tinder know my interests?

When you sign up for Tinder you only answer questions about your age and location. Unlike other dating sites like Hinge, you don’t fill out your religious preferences or what you do for fun. Some theories do exist for how Tinder knows your interests.

To start, the app will begin to learn who you’re interested in based on your swipe patterns. If you like four people who hike and one who has a boat, the app will assume you like the outdoors.

Another theory is that when you upload your photos, the app can assess what you enjoy doing. If you’ve got four photos at your favorite bar with friends, it’s going to assume you’re outgoing and fun. Adversely, if you’ve got seven photos on your couch with your cat, it will assume you’re not into people who like to go out a lot.

I got a lot of likes at first, did my score drop?

A drop in likes after creating a Tinder account doesn’t necessarily mean that your score is lower. It simply means that you got a boost when you first signed up.

Whenever a new person joins Tinder they get a little ‘first-timers’ push into the pool of eligible matches. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Keep Swiping as You’ve Swiped Before

Unfortunately, there’s no way to check your ranking other than your personal feeling. So, should do everything in your power to remain on the algorithm’s good side and hope for the best. Use the app the same way you did before, and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

So, be active, engage in conversations, don’t be a bot, and present yourself in the best way possible. This is the formula for the perfect Tinder rank.

John says:
is it possible that everytime you swipe right, your rank lowers as well? I actually noticed that if I create an account and don’t swipe right on any profile for at least 24 hours, I get a lot more likes compared to if I create a new account and start swiping right on profiles(not spammy swipe, just normal behavior).
