How To Download and Archive Your Instagram Account

Many things have changed in 2018 regarding the sensitive data that companies collect, store, use, process, or share. New Internet policies have been declared by the European Union and all companies that collect private, sensitive data had to adjust their platforms accordingly.

Since Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms today, the new regulations have made quite a few changes to the platform we all love. Instagram now adheres to the General Data Protection Regulation (the EU’s new law), which allows social media users to have more control over their shared data.

One of the possibilities created by the GDPR is that you can now download and save your Instagram data. This can come in handy if you want to move to a different platform or you just want to keep a copy of everything from this platform.

This article will show you how you can download your Instagram profile’s data and store it on your device.

Downloading and Archiving Your Instagram Account’s Information

Downloading your Instagram account’s data used to only be possible through Instagram’s desktop version of the platform. Nowadays, you can save and archive your profile both from your mobile phone and your computer.

Let’s check both of these options.

Downloading Your Instagram Account’s Data on a Computer

If you want to store your account’s data on your personal computer, you can do it in a few steps.

First, you need to open Instagram’s desktop version of their platform. Simply visit www.instagram.com to do so. If you have never logged into your Instagram account from your computer, you will have to enter your Instagram username and password.

Once that is completed and you have gained access to your account, navigate to your profile by clicking on the last icon in the top-right corner.Profile

Now, you will need to enter your account’s settings page. To do this, simply click on the Settings icon located next to the Edit Profile button. After clicking on the Setting icon, you will be prompted with the options you can use to adjust your profile through the desktop version of Instagram.Privacy and Security

Select Privacy and Security. Finally, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Request Download from the Data Download section. This is found below the Two-Factor Authentication field.

You will then be taken to a second page, where you’ll need to enter your account’s email address and then select Next.Get a Copy

It may take up to 48 hours for Instagram to collect your requested data and send it to the email address that you have entered. They will send you a link from which you can download everything to do with your Instagram account.

Downloading Your Instagram Account’s Data on a Mobile Phone

To download your Instagram account’s data on your mobile phone, regardless of your mobile phone’s operating system (Android/iPhone), you will need to do the following.

Open your Instagram app on your mobile phone. Then navigate to your profile by tapping on the Profile icon located in the lower-left part of your screen.

Tap on the three horizontal lines, which are located in the top-right corner of your Instagram profile page. That will open a drop-down menu with different features that you can use.

Tap on the Settings option found at the very bottom of this drop-down menu. The Settings page will pop up. Select the Security option and tap on Download Data, found in the Data and History section.

Finally, you need to enter the email where you want to receive your Instagram data and tap on Request Download. Just like in the previous case, this procedure might take up to 48 hours to complete.

Now, all that’s left for you to do is wait for an email that contains a link from which you can download your Instagram account’s data.

Keep Track of Your Data

Those are your two options when it comes to saving your Instagram account’s data on your device. As we have mentioned, you can use these methods to create copies of your data on social media or just to make moving to a different platform easier.
