How to Find Friends in a Specific City in Facebook

Not sure how to find Facebook friends in the city where you work or study? Don’t worry, this article is here to provide all the guidance you need.

The actions to find friends in a specific city are pretty straightforward. But it would be nice if Facebook made the UI more streamlined and removed some of the redundant steps. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t struggle to do it on your desktop or smartphone.

In Search for the Long-Lost Pal from Albuquerque

The following steps assume you already have a Facebook account and have logged into it. For the purpose of this article and the love of Donald Duck, the example city is Albuquerque. Of course, you can use any city you wish.

The steps also include some pointers for smartphone users. But the steps and actions themselves are universal and almost the same.

Step 1

Once you’re logged in, navigate to the upper left corner of the screen and click on your name. This action brings you to your profile, where you select the Friends tab under the cover image.

The action is pretty similar on the Facebook app. When you enter the News Feed, tap on your profile image, scroll down, and hit “Find Friends”.

Step 2

If you’re using Facebook on desktop, you can now see the list of friend requests and “People You May Know”. There’s also a “Find Friends” button in the menu on top. But it’s not of any help since nothing happens when you click on it – the page just refreshes.

As for the app, you’re already in the correct menu and no further actions are required at this point.

Step 3

This is where things get a bit confusing and not exactly intuitive. The logical thing to do is type the name of the city in the search bar and sift through the given results.

But Facebook’s algorithm focuses on people’s names, rather than places, even though you’re typing the name of a city. Nevertheless, feel free to type the name and hit enter. This action reveals a more comprehensive menu where you can actually search by places.

If you’re on a smartphone the situation is similar. Hit the search bar, type the name of the city, and voila – there’s a bar to further filter the search.

Side Note: The UX feels better on the app than on a desktop, which isn’t surprising since most people access Facebook this way.

Step 4

Now, you’re finally where you’re supposed to be. When searching for Facebook friends on a desktop, the filtering menu is on the left-hand side of the screen.

Under City, click on “Choose a City…” and type the name of the location in the designated bar. Facebook is really good at figuring out what you want. So the city should pop up after just a few letters.

The important thing here is to make sure you’ve selected the People tab in the menu at the top of the screen. With this in mind, you can also search for Places, Posts, Videos, etc. that are related to that particular city.

As for the app, you need to tap on City, re-type the name, and hit OK. It would have been nice if Facebook picked up on your initial search and offered the city as the first suggestion. But for some reason, this doesn’t happen.

Step 5

At this point, it’s only a matter of finding the person you’re looking for. If you know their name, type it into the search bar and browse through the results until you find the right person.

But what if you can’t remember the name? The first trick is to check the box in front of “Friends of Friends”. This action should prioritize people who’ve befriended your friends on Facebook.

Following the logic of less than six degrees of separation, this should make the search more refined. If this doesn’t help you can apply further filters by Education and Work. Again, it should narrow down the results to just a handful of names and make the elusive friend just a click away.

Note: The same filtering technique applies to the app and you get the same results.

Neat Search Trick

Another way to do it changes your current city to the one you’re looking for. To do so, you need to access your Facebook profile page, select “Edit Details” under Intro, and choose “Add current city”.

When you click on Friends, Facebook should prioritize the people from that city under “Friends Suggestions”. However, this isn’t exactly the best method because the social network giant might be factoring in your current geotags.

Therefore, it could list an array of mixed suggestions – the ones from the city you’re looking for and the ones based on other parameters. This is the reason why it’s best to stick to the first method described.

You’ve Got a New Friend

Despite the changes in Facebook’s demographics, it’s still one of the most powerful platforms. And even though the UI might seem a bit clunky, Facebook offers one of the most comprehensive search menus.
