How the Snapchat Score is Calculated

Snapchat has mastered the art of getting its users to interact more. They’ve gamified their app with the Snapchat score, a mysterious number that lets you partially know how active you are on the social media platform. However, Snapchat is not forthcoming with exactly how that score gets calculated.

How the Snapchat Score is Calculated

If you look at the Snapchat FAQ about this score, they refer to it as a “super secret special equation.” They hint that this equation involves the number of snaps you’ve sent and received. However, they also mention “a couple of other factors.” In short, you can rest assured that being active on the app will likely help your score, but you can’t know precisely how.

Understanding the Snapscore

Various tech blogs and third-party sites have attempted to troubleshoot these scores to get to the bottom of how Snapchat activity affects them. Many of them have managed to locate some elements in common. However, these findings are never confirmed by app developers. Consider this food for thought.

  • Snaps Sent and Received – Snapchat has already confirmed that these basic functions play into the score.

  • Users Added – How many people do you follow? How many are you friends with?

  • Snap Frequency – How often do you use the app?

  • Length of SnapStreaks – You can have SnapStreaks with friends by sending and receiving snaps for several consecutive days.

  • Stories Posted – How often do you post stories?

  • Bonus Points for Coming Back – Many sources theorize that if you haven’t used the app in a while and then come back and start snapping, then you’ll get a boost to your score.

In short, use the Snapchat app, use it often, and take advantage of its many features. Do this, and you’ll have a healthy Snapchat score.

How to Find Your Snapchat Score

How do you know your Snapchat score to compare it to your friends? Are their scores bigger than yours? It’s easier to find your Snapchat score than you think.

  1. Go to your profile screen by tapping on your Bitmoji icon or the circle in the upper left-hand corner if you don’t have a Bitmoji icon.
  2. Find your Display Name under your Snapcode image. Look beneath that to find additional information. The number in between your username and zodiac sign is your Snapchat Score.

  3. Tap on the Snapchat Score to reveal two other numbers. These are the numbers of snaps you’ve sent and received.

Don’t do the math with the number of snaps sent and received. It won’t add up to your score in any way that makes sense.

How to Find Your Friend’s Snapscore

Now that you know your SnapScore, how do you find your friend’s score? Do they have more points than you? Snapchat doesn’t provide any leaderboard where you can gawk at users with the highest volume. Instead, you have to look at scores individually by checking out your friends’ profiles.

  1. From your “camera” screen, swipe right to open a chat window.

  2. Find the user in question.
  3. Tap on the “user profile icon” to open a page that shows their display name, username, and score.

Snapscore FAQs

Why can’t I see my friends’ Snapscore?

If you’re an avid Snapchat user, you know how serious the Snapscore is. Keeping your friends and growing your friend list are equally important, aside from your friend emojis and promptly getting fast responses to your Snaps.

If you have a friend on Snapchat but cannot see their Snapscore, that means they haven’t added you to their friend list or they deleted you. Snapchat only shows you the Snapscore of mutual friends, meaning that the user also friended you.

If this is a concern of yours, you could send the user a message on Snapchat or use an external social media site to see if they will add you.

I’ve spent a lot of time snapping groups, but my score isn’t going up. What’s happening?

Although Snapchat’s developers haven’t confirmed it, it’s a generally accepted belief based on tests that hanging out in groups on the app will not increase your Snapscore.

If you’re looking for a way to increase your Snapscore quickly, unfortunately, groups aren’t the answer.

How can I increase my Snapscore?

The best way to increase your Snapscore is to add friends and send one-on-one Snaps. If you’re dedicated, and you have a good friend trying to accomplish the same thing you are, make a deal with them to Snap frequently.

As a bonus, you could get a Snap Streak, which leads to new emojis as a sign of true Snapchat friendship.

Can my Snapscore go down?

Technically no, Snapscores never go down—only up. This scenario means that you shouldn’t lose points. However, glitches sometimes get reported where users’ Snapscores have declined. If your score drops, you may want to use the Report a problem link on Snapchat to contact someone for help.

Why isn’t my Snapscore going up?

If your Snapscore isn’t going up, it’s because you aren’t performing the appropriate behaviors (snapping individuals, adding friends, etc.) to increase the score. However, errors do happen. Your best course of action is to ensure your app is updated. Close the app and reopen it, then contact Snapchat support.

Raising Your Snapscore

In closing, your Snapchat score will not unlock special Snapchat features. It will not make it easier for people to find and follow you. It does nothing functional, technically. However, you get trophies that you can brag about to your friends.

As for security and safety, keep in mind that websites scam you into thinking they can artificially boost your score if you pay them money. They can’t do what they claim, and it’s not worth the trouble of finding out the hard way.

Just snap a lot, make new friends, and admire your internet trophies. You’ll soon be on your way to a higher Snapscore!
