How To Find & View Facebook Memories

Facebook has completely changed the way we look at and use social network platforms. Many features were introduced over the years, and Facebook Memories is one of them.

The feature allows you to view some posts, photos, and moments from before. You can easily find all of the special moments dating back to the point when you’ve created your profile. The memories are sorted into four categories, so you can find what you need easier. Read on to learn how to see your memories on Facebook.

Memories in Sections

Facebook has divided all of your memories into four different sections:

  • On This Day
  • Friends Made on This Day
  • Recaps of Memories
  • Memories You May Have Missed

Each section has different memories you can share with friends and people that mean something to you. Let’s take a closer look at what each section means.

See Memories on Facebook

On This Day Memories

The content in this category will remind you of the important moments that happened on a specific day. The memories date back to the year when you created your profile. Some dates won’t have any memories to show, while the others could contain several memories. It’s the easiest way of remembering what happened on a specific date.

Friends Made On This Day

Facebook will remind you of the days when you made friends on the platform. You can keep track of the dates when you became friends with the people you love, and Facebook even creates a video or a photo collage with the memories you shared over time. It’s a great way of reminding yourself of some past events that changed your life.

Recaps of Memories

Memory recaps show you the recaps of memories that happened in a month or a season. You can view them in the form of a short video or a message. Again, the feature allows you to look back at all of the moments that meant something to you and your friends.

Memories You May Have Missed

If you don’t like to check your memories all the time, this section will let you know everything you’ve missed from the past week.

How to Access Facebook Memories

The Facebook Memories feature was last updated in 2018. You can check your memories at any time by clicking the Memories bookmark to the left of your news feed. Here is how to access your memories on Facebook:

Step 1

Open the app or the official Facebook webpage.

Step 2

Extend the Explore tab to see the Memories bookmark.

Step 3

The memories that happened on that day will appear in the feed.

Finding Specific Memories

There is another way you can find some special moments from the past, regardless of what day it is. It will take a little more effort, but you can find anything and everything that happened on Facebook. If you want to find a specific post or memory from years back, here is how to do it:

Step 1

Open the app or the official Facebook webpage.

Step 2

Write a date, keyword, or name in the search engine.

Step 3

Select the category you want to view on the left-hand side of the page.

Step 4

Look for specific posts based on different parameters.

You can look for a specific post or a group. You can also find posts made by other people, including your friends and the groups you are a member of.

Updating Your Preferences

If you want to find something you’ve posted yourself, it is best to look through the “Date Posted” tab. There, you can cycle through your entire posting history on Facebook, dating to the day you made your profile. You will be amazed at what you can find in your old posts from five or even ten years ago. Some things are better left in the past, so be careful when viewing your old Facebook memories. Here is how to filter memories based on dates.

Facebook Memories

Step 1

Open the Facebook Memories tab.

Step 2

Click on Hide Dates and then Add New Date Range.

Step 3

Select the start date and the end date of the memories you want to hide.

Step 4

Click Save and all of the memories you’ve selected will not appear in the feed.

Finding a Post

If you’re looking for a specific post or memory you can search by date and month. To search for a date or time, do this:

Step 1

Visit your Profile page and click ‘Filters’ which should be located below the “What’s on Your Mind?” box.

Step 2

Use the filter options to narrow your search criteria.

Step 3

Use the Grid View option to see more posts. When you find the one you’re interested in click on it, share, delete, or make edits as necessary.

Can I delete my memories?

Yes, but unfortunately only one at a time. When an old post pops up that you wish you would’ve deleted simply click on the three horizontal dots in the upper right-hand corner and click to delete the post.

Why am I only seeing some memories?

Next to preferences check your Notifications options. A drop-down menu will appear, click ‘All Memories’ if ‘Highlights’ or ‘None’ are checked.

Share Your Finds with Old Friends

Sometimes, life separates friends. Time flies by quickly, and people come and go. It’s easy to forget about a person if you haven’t stayed in touch for years, and that’s where Facebook memories make the biggest difference.

You will sometimes be reminded of people or events you have completely forgotten about. The memories will take you back to that exact moment, giving you a reason to re-connect with an old friend so you can continue where you stopped.

How can I see what came up in yesterday’s memories, my setting was highlights only, and I do not have original posting date
Avatar Leigh says:
Hi Kate, I had the same problem a memory came up 5 days ago and I wanted to repost it but lost it. This guys remedy did not work because when you go to edit preferences under “memories” it only allowes you to “block out” a certain date or time period, not SEE it.
Anyway I figured out how to see past posts. On your own fb page, not “home” but your name, there is a “MANAGE POSTS” on the right side under your picture. Click that and on the left side is a “Date Posted” you put in a year and you can go back thru the months to find what you are looking for. It goes from december back. That way you can easily go thru a year to find what you are looking for. You already know it was September, just go back thru the years. Hope that helps.

Leigh: Thanks for that. I was searching for a post with a photo I’d made on 4 Mar 2014. I couldn’t remember what I’d typed to go with the photo. I tried some keywords and nothing showed up. I tried the date and it still didn’t show up, in my Activity Log or in any other search box. Eventually, all I could do was download all my data from Facebook, open the index page for it, click on Posts and search the web page that came up, in the regular way.
