Hard as you tried, you couldn’t resist joining the TikTok hype train. We don’t blame you. The video-sharing social media app is nothing short of a sensation. Created by the Beijing-based developer company ByteDance in 2012, TikTok has gone on to receive universal acclaim for its simple interface and convenient design. Today, it has massive markets not only in China and neighboring India, but has successfully penetrated the North American and European markets too.
TikTok’s rise is all the more special when one considers that the German app, Dubsmash, was the go-to app for video enthusiasts on the internet. Just like Dubsmash, TikTok allows its users to create brief lip-sync videos based on audio clips from the app’s library. Apart from these videos lasting a maximum of 15 seconds, TikTok also allows you to make looping videos lasting from three seconds to a minute long.
Today, despite being of Chinese origin, TikTok is one of the most downloaded apps in the US. Its popularity across the globe can be evidenced by the fact that it was the seventh most downloaded app during the entirety of the previous decade.
While a lot of users create videos on the TikTok app to share with their fans on the app itself, its abiding popularity is in part down to the convenience with which you can share your creations on other social media apps. Whether it’s Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, or Facebook, TikTok allows you to share your videos at the touch of a button.
But many of these social media apps allow their users to share limited-length videos only. In such a scenario, you might want to trim your video before uploading and sharing it on other apps.
Thankfully, TikTok has an in-built trimmer which allows you to trim the videos you’ve just created. There’re also third-party apps which can help you with that. In this article, we’ll show you how to go about trimming your TikTok videos with minimum fuss.
Trimming Videos Using the TikTok App
Trimming videos using the in-built trimmer in TikTok is easy. The process remains the same on both Android and iOS devices. Just follow the steps below:
After the installation is complete, open the app on your mobile device and then tap on the + icon you’ll find at the bottom of the screen.
Now TikTok will ask you to choose the sound you want to lip-sync to. Tap on Add a Sound at the upper right corner of the screen. Simply tap the red button at the bottom to begin recording a video.
Once you’re done recording your video, tap on the Check icon at the bottom right of the screen. You’ll now see the option to Trim your video at the upper right corner. Just tap on it and then trim the video to the length you’re comfortable with.
When done, tap Next. You’ll now be able to download the video you’ve just created by tapping the Download icon at the bottom left of the screen.
You Can Do a Lot More Than Trimming!
The appeal of TikTok is down to its amazing possibilities. Apart from trimming videos on the app itself, you can also use the Mixer option to set the relative sound levels between the sound you recorded and the sound clip you chose before making the video.
Then, there’s the Effects panel. Using this option will open a library with multiple effects, along with a timeline of the video you’ve just recorded. The great thing about the Effects panel in TikTok is that you can choose to add the effects only on certain sections of the video as well.
There’re also options to Set Cover for your video. It’s a feature which is similar to YouTube, which allows you to select a particular frame for your video as the cover of your creation.
Filters can be applied to the whole video and informs its appearance.
The last option provided by TikTok gives you the ability to add Stickers to the video you’ve just created.
External Editors Are Helpful Too!
If for some reason the in-built trimmer of the TikTok app doesn’t fulfil your purpose, you’ve a host of external third party-apps which can help you in your quest. But please note that not all these editors are specific to TikTok videos and as a result might not offer customized changes like the app itself.
For Android users, you can use any kind of video editing app to trim your TikTok videos. The most popular (and free) of these apps include the PowerDirector , BeeCut , YouCut and Inshot , among several others.
If you use the TikTok app on an iOS device, we recommend that you use Apple’s default video-editing tool, iMovie , to trim and edit your videos. You can also use Splice or the Filmmaker Pro Video Editor.
All these apps are convenient and can be used with no prior knowledge. We recommend you use the in-built editor in TikTok for trimming your videos. But if you constantly need to edit videos which aren’t all created on TikTok, we suggest that you go with one of the external apps mentioned in this article.
So, what are you waiting for? Go create videos using the TikTok app and share them with the world!
