Does Tinder Automatically Renew Subscriptions?

Does Tinder automatically renew subscriptions? How can you stop the subscriptions? Can you get a refund if you forget to cancel but no longer want to pay? Read on for the answers to these questions.

Tinder should need little introduction. The dating app that changed how we meet significant others forever whether that’s temporarily or longer term. The basic app is free to use and requires no subscription as long as you don’t mind ads, but to get more out of it, Tinder offers two subscription packages.

Tinder subscriptions

Those packages are Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold. Tinder Plus offers some useful features, the main one being it removes ads which is almost worth the $9.99 just for that. Tinder Plus also offers Rewind that lets you undo a mistaken swipe, unlimited right swipes, 5 Super Likes, the ability to hide distance and age and the ability to change your location in Passport.

Tinder Gold adds the Likes You feature. This gives you a grid page of people who have already swiped right on you. If you don’t want the hassle of all that swiping and want to fast track your way to a date, this is how you do it.

Both Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold require a subscription. You subscribe using the Google Play Store or the Apple Store depending on the platform you’re using. If you use Tinder Online, you pay direct. All payments automatically renew subscriptions. This is painted as a convenience for the user but is actually a tried and tested way to maximize revenue. Either way, they will keep taking the money until you stop them.

Cancel your Tinder subscription on Android

You can cancel your Tinder subscription using your phone or web browser. It takes just a few seconds and will acknowledge the change. Your Tinder subscription will continue until the end of the billing period when it will return to the free version.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app on your phone.
  2. Select Account from the left.
  3. Navigate to Subscriptions and select Tinder.
  4. Select Cancel or Unsubscribe.
  5. Confirm your decision to stop the subscription.

Google Play says you will not be refunded for any partial months you have paid for but don’t want to use. However, if you forgot about the subscription and highlight it within 48 hours or so, contacting Google customer support should get you your money back.

You can also cancel your Tinder subscription on your computer.

  1. Navigate to Google Play and log into your account.
  2. Select My subscriptions from the left menu.
  3. Select Tinder in the center pane and select Manage.
  4. Select Cancel Subscription from the options.

The end result is exactly the same. You remain a premium member until your paid period is up and will then revert back to the free version of Tinder.

Cancel your Tinder Gold subscription on iOS

The same rules apply to Apple as they do to Android. Your premium subscription will continue until the end of the billing period where it will switch to Tinder free.

  1. Navigate to your Settings within iOS.
  2. Select iTunes & App Store and log in using your Apple ID.
  3. Navigate to Subscriptions and select Manage.
  4. Select Tinder and Unsubscribe.

Toggle auto-renew off to avoid any further automatic payments. If you don’t toggle this off, Tinder may take further payments the next month. To avoid automatically renewing the  subscription make sure this setting is off. If you don’t see the toggle, log into iTunes on your computer and do it there.

Apple also says it does not refund payment but if you contact them direct, they often will.

Cancel Tinder Gold on online

If you use Tinder Online, you cannot unsubscribe using an app store as it doesn’t use one. You need to manually unsubscribe using the website.

  1. Log in to Tinder Online.
  2. Select your profile icon and select Manage Account.
  3. Select Cancel and disable auto-renew.

Even though Tinder Online works differently to the app versions, the rules are the same. You retain access to Tinder Plus or Gold until your paid period expires and then you revert back to Tinder free.

Tinder certainly does automatically renew subscriptions. Like many premium apps, the company knows that it gains goodwill by keeping things simple for users. More importantly for them, they also retain a revenue stream whether you actually use the app or not. As it takes a little effort to cancel the subscription, Tinder knows many people will forget or not bother just in case they might want to use it again. What company is going to ignore free money?
