How To Unmute an Instagram Story
Every time you scroll through your Instagram news feed, you will see updates from friends, family, acquaintances, and even businesses that you follow. At times, another persons’ Instagram Story maybe a little too much. Fortunately, the app’s developers programmed the “mute” option.
Muting someone’s story is great because it doesn’t notify them that they’re content is being suppressed. There aren’t any hurt feelings with this feature. It’s also a simple way to take a break from another persons’ content for a while without unfriending or blocking them.
Instagram Stories are unique because they’re posted right at the top of your screen. This is a great way to stay up-to-date with content, but if you’re following a lot of accounts, or someone is oversharing, this can get in the way of your Instagram fun. If this is the case, you can mute them.
But what if you want to undo this change? How can you reverse the process? What should you do if you mute someone by mistake?

How Do You Unmute a Story on Instagram?
There are a few ways to unmute an Instagram story. Both Android and iOS users can follow the steps listed below to reinstate Instagram stories.
Option 1 – Quick and Simple
If you’ve muted a story but don’t remember the username, or if you’re not sure that you’ve even muted a story, this is the simplest option:
Scroll to the right on the story feed at the top of the screen. Locate any greyed out profile icons.
Long press the profile picture in question
That’s it, once you’ve done this your friend’s content will instantly come back to your Instagram news feed.
Option 2 – Going to Their Profile
If you know who you muted you can unmute them by visiting their profile. To unmute someone from their profile follow these instructions:
Go to the profile in question by tapping the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen and typing in their username. Once located, follow these steps:
Locate ‘Following’ and tap it
Toggle the switches from blue to grey
That’s all you need to do to unmute someone from their profile.
Option 3 – Older Versions of Instagram
Instagram has recently updated their ‘mute’ and ‘unmute’ options. If you haven’t updated your app and the options listed above aren’t working for you, try this instead.
The unmute option is located exactly below the person’s name and above their Highlights – that is, the stories that they’ve decided to keep on their profile.
You should find a note that says “You have muted [Instagram name]’s story” and simply tap on “Unmute”, which is located next to the note. The option to unmute their story will appear in bold letters, so it’s difficult to miss. The person’s stories will then appear on your Story Feed again. This is your fastest option for unmuting.
The end result will be the same if you tap on Options (the three dots in the upper right corner of the person’s Instagram profile) and then select Mute. After tapping on Mute, a new window will appear asking you if you want to:
- Mute that person’s posts
- Mute/Unmute their story
- Exit options
Select Unmute from the displayed window and, their stories will instantly be unmuted. Simple as that.
The third and final way that you can unmute someone’s story requires you to slide to the end of your Story Feed where the muted stories are located. You will notice that those stories don’t have the usual red circle around them. Instead, they are completely pale.
Tap and hold on one of those Instagram story circles and a new window will appear. It will give you the option to view that person’s profile and unmute their story, so tap on the second option.
This method can be used if you forgot who you have muted or if you can’t find their profile on Instagram.
That’s all there is to it! Whatever your reasons for needing to unmute somebody’s story are, you can use any of these three methods to do it quickly and easily.
How to Pause Someone’s Story
Once you tap on someone’s Instagram story, it lasts only for a couple of seconds. This can get quite irritating if you want to take a better look at a particular shot, or just view it again.
Luckily, you can pause the story before the next one takes its place just by tapping and holding on your screen. This will freeze the timer and the story won’t be replaced. Yes, you’ll need to be fast, especially if your friend has crammed a lot of little shots into one story.
If the story was a video, doing this will freeze the video on the frame that you’ve tapped on.
