How To Change Your Location on Tinder

Tinder is such a wildly popular application in today’s modern society. Whether you’re looking for a date, the future love of your life, or just a new friend, Tinder will show you the other app users within your area. Unfortunately, if you’re in a small town the pool of other users may be very small. If you travel a lot, your automatic location settings could be a major drawback.

If you need to change your location on Tinder, keep reading. In this article, I’ll show you how to persuade Tinder that you are in a different place so that you can find matches anywhere on the planet.

How Tinder Looks at Location

Tinder doesn’t initially ask you where you’re from because it knows, or at least, it thinks it does. Tinder works by pulling your location from your phone’s GPS service. The app then looks for potential matches for you within the search radius that you specify, which can be anywhere from 1 to 100 miles.

So if the perfect someone happens to be 101 miles away, you’re pretty much out of luck, unless you persuade Tinder that you’re actually somewhere different than what your phone says.

Change your location with Tinder Plus

The simplest and most straightforward way to change your location is to be a Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold subscriber. Premium customers are allowed to change their location whenever they want, and they get some side benefits from that ability as well.

Tinder Plus costs $9.99 a month, and Tinder Gold costs even more, so the ability to change locations at will doesn’t come free. (You might want to check out our article on the various benefits and costs of the different levels of Tinder.)

The relocation feature is called Tinder Passport, and it allows you to change your location in the app as many times as you want to. You can only swipe in one city at any given time, but you can set up to four default locations, allowing you to switch back and forth quickly between a set of places.

Whenever you enter the fifth location, Tinder will delete the oldest location you had previously set. The good news for premium users is that when you set your location to a new place, you get the coveted newbie boost, which is an excellent way to rejuvenate your matches! This can be a significant benefit to your visibility and is a largely unknown bonus to using Passport – Tinder doesn’t advertise it.

Using Passport is simple. Just go into the app settings, and look for “Discovery Settings”. Tap on the bar that says “Swiping in” (if you use Android) or “Location” (for iOS users), and it will bring up the location selection screen.

You can then select an existing location by tapping on it, or tap “Add a new location” and the map will open up, helpfully centered on the Gulf of Guinea in Africa.

Enter the location where you actually want to “be” and your Tinder card stack will reset to that location and you will basically be starting from scratch. Note that it may take a little while for new potential matches to show up in your feed.

Also, bear in mind that while you are swiping in the new Passport location, your distance is going to show up to those matches as being whatever the distance is between your Passport location and where you actually physically are – so you might want to add something to your bio to explain why people are matching with you even though you’re 4,284 miles away.

Fake Your Location on Android

If you don’t want to spend $9.99 a month for Tinder Plus, there are other options available.

How to change your location on Tinder2

Because of the accessibility of the GPS information on an Android phone, you can (fairly) easily “spoof” Tinder by having your phone tell it you’ve physically moved to a new spot. This method is a little hit and miss (i.e. it doesn’t always work) but you can change your GPS location on your phone and try to fool Tinder in the process.

  1. Download and install a fake GPS app for Android. As you can see, there are a couple of them available. :)
  2. Open the Settings menu on your Android device.
  3. Search for or navigate to the Developer Options screen.
  4. Turn Developer Options “on” if necessary.
  5. If your phone has a toggle for “Allow mock locations”, set it to “on”.
  6. Tap on “Select mock location app”.
  7. Select your fake GPS app as the app.
  8. Go back to Settings and then Location.
  9. Select Location Mode and change it to Device only (GPS only).
  10. Open the Tinder app and navigate to Settings and Discovery.
  11. Change the Search Distance to something different to force Tinder to reacquire your location.
  12. Start swiping!

Tinder seems to be steadily working to eliminate this trick with every new version of the app they release. If you have trouble with this, you can try downloading and using an older version of the Tinder app. Just don’t allow automatic updates while you utilize that older version. There are older versions of the Tinder APK file on the web; this page has a repository of old APKs but we cannot vouch for their safety. We can, of course, show you how to install APKs on your Android phone.

Fake Your Location on iOS

Faking your location on an iPhone is significantly trickier because Apple really doesn’t want you to do it. There are a number of apps that claim to be able to fake out your GPS without jailbreaking the phone. One that does appear to work is iTools from ThinkSky. iTools will let you change your location three times for free in the trial version; after that, you have to pay to use the program. It costs $30.95 or more depending on what level of license you want and how many devices you want to install it on. iTools also only works on iOS versions 12 and under.

Another option is to jailbreak your iPhone. We have an article reviewing the pros and cons of this approach. Jailbreaking is risky and it’s not for the cautious or inexperienced user; you can very easily turn your iPhone into a very expensive, very ineffective paperweight. Explaining how it’s done is beyond the scope of this article. If you decide to proceed with jailbreaking your iPhone, be careful, and get expert help with the process.

Everywhere for Tinder

How to change your location on Tinder4Another way to change your location on Tinder is to use a specific app for the task. Everywhere for Tinder is one such app. It utilizes fake GPS data to enable you to swipe anywhere in the world. It works in a similar manner to the fake GPS method above by allowing you to set a fake location from within Android. The app takes care of the rest. It basically works by automating the manual process of using a fake GPS app above. Everywhere for Tinder is also a little hit and miss. Some users have complained that it just doesn’t work while others say it is a little slow. I tried it out on my old Nexus 5 and it seems to work okay. The initial loading of the cards took around a minute, but other than that, and a few ads at the top of the screen, worked fine.

  1. Download and install Everywhere for Tinder.

As long as you have turned off wireless network discovery and have Everywhere for Tinder running, you should now have global access to cards. The app is definitely a little hit and miss. Sometimes Tinder is searching forever and doesn’t find matches. Sometimes it does. Restarting the app generally forces it to find people eventually.

The only by-the-books way to change your Tinder location is to cough up the cash for a subscription, which might be the best path if you’re going to be traveling or moving soon.

However, if you’re just looking for a day trip beyond the outer belt, give one of the location spoof methods a try.  Just remember to not refresh, and to turn your GPS back on before you go for a drive to meet the new love of your life.

It doesn’t work on tinder for me, but every other app gets tricked. I can’t understand how tinder still figures out where I actually am, and that pisses me off.
I now follow the advice to use the mobile version, but I still have a question : does it only show to me the girls in the mocked location, or am I also visible at this place for them too?

You can change your Tinder location without buying anything. Just use a GPS faker app and the Tinder mobile website. Not the Tinder app.
