How To Change Your Name in Bumble

It’s easy to change some things in your Bumble account, like your educational status. However, the site has fairly strict controls on things like changing your name, which may be an issue for some folks who would like to maintain a degree of privacy online.

Your display name on Bumble can’t be changed from whatever it was set to when you signed up for the service, so if you decide to use a nickname or an alternative form of your own name, you’re out of luck if that isn’t what you signed up with.

Fortunately, there is a way around this restriction. In this article, I will show you how to change your name in Bumble.

Creating a Bumble Account

When you sign up for Bumble, you have two options for creating an account. You can either create an account using your Facebook account, or you can create an account using a phone number.

If you create the account using your Facebook account, then Bumble will use your name as it is listed in your Facebook account, and you will not have the choice to use a different name. If you use a phone number, you can provide whatever name you like.

Creating a Bumble Account with Facebook

When you sign up for Bumble with Facebook, Bumble will take all of your profile information, including your name, from your Facebook account. There is no way to change your name unless you change it on Facebook first, so change your name on your Facebook account BEFORE signing up for Bumble.

Once you choose the ‘Continue With Facebook’ option and open the Facebook app, the following window appears.

The only required pieces of information are those in your public profile. You can uncheck all the others if you are not comfortable sharing them with Bumble. However, even if the information that is not required is unchecked, the app still gets your age and location.

Creating a Bumble Account With a Phone Number

When you choose to use a phone number, Bumble will call the phone number you provide in order to verify your account. Once you get the call, you have to type the last four digits of the caller ID in the given boxes. The call should arrive within 30 seconds of your signup.

You can also choose to receive a text message instead of a phone call, in which case you will receive a text message with your confirmation code.

When the verification is done you will be able to enter any name or birth date that you want.

What If I Already Have a Bumble Account?

Unfortunately, Bumble does not allow you to change your profile name after you sign up.

If you already have a Bumble account and want to create a new one with a new name, the first step is to delete your existing account. This means that you’ll lose all of your previous conversations and matches, so keep that in mind before following through with this process.

Deleting Your Bumble Account

If you’re ready to delete your old account and create a new one, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Settings menu in the Bumble app.
  2. Click on the Delete Account button.
  3. Verify your decision to delete your account.
  4. Create your new Bumble account with your new name.

Remove Access to Facebook

Even though you deleted your Bumble profile, if you originally used Facebook to sign up for Bumble, the app still has access to your Facebook account.

To remove this access, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Facebook app and go to the Account Settings icon.
  2. Swipe down to Settings & Privacy and open the drop-down menu. In the menu, tap on Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu swipe up until you reach Apps and Websites and tap to open it.
  4. On top of the Apps and Websites menu, you can find Logged in with Facebook settings. Tap on it.
  5. Tap on the circle in front of Bumble to mark it, then tap Remove to revoke its permissions to read data from Facebook.

Now that you have removed Bumble from your initial Facebook account, you can connect the app to an alternative one which has the name that you want to be displayed on Bumble, or sign up for a new account using a phone number.

Final Thoughts

Changing your name on Bumble isn’t trivial; you have to create a new account to do it. If it’s worth it to you to take that step, then it shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes to complete the process. Just follow the steps above to get started.

Anonymous this time says:
I have an unusual first name which makes it very easy for people to google me and find my Facebook account. I signed up to Bumble using my Facebook account and it’s meant that guys who I didn’t match with were able to contact me via messenger and circumvent the Bumble ethos of waiting to see if a woman matches with you and decides to contact you from within the app. Another guy contacted me via Facebook messenger to ask me why I unmatched from him in Bumble. He went on to argue, insult and harass me until I blocked him in messenger, Facebook, Twitter, & instagram.
For an app that purports to be female focused, it doesn’t really do enough to protect women by letting them choose a nickname after they’ve had their account verified.
Not a Bumble fan says:
I’ve just had the very same thing happen to me: some guy who I matched with, but didn’t write to, added me as a friend on Facebook. I asked Bumble why this might happen – and they said it was because my surname was displayed. I looked through my profile – and could only see my first name displaying, but regardless, there was no way for me to change it at all nor any explanation about why my full name was showing (and where!).

I’ve since deleted my account because it’s incredibly creepy. I understand the need for verification through Facebook, but … why display the surname?! It’s not very safe and secure for an app that’s all about supporting and protecting women.
