How To Enable Dark Mode on Facebook

Since Apple introduced the Dark Mode for its OS, the feature has become more popular for other companies as well. The reason for Dark Mode’s popularity is pretty straightforward. It makes it easier for you to enjoy your favorite apps at night because the mode dims the screen and tones down colors.

A benefit of the dark mode is that your eyes will suffer less strain. Given how much time most of us spend looking at screens, it’s a good idea to do whatever you can to lessen the strain on your eyes.

Does Facebook Have a Dark Mode?

As for the Dark Mode on Facebook, the company has only partially jumped on the “dark mode” bandwagon, at least for now. This means you can use the native features to enable the mode on Facebook Messenger, but there is no way to enable it on the Facebook app itself.

How to Turn On Dark Mode for Facebook

To switch to dark mode with the newest updates (for those who have the option available):

Step 1

Tap on the arrow to the far upper right-hand corner

Step 2

Click ‘Switch to New Facebook’

Step 3

Choose dark mode in the popup and click ‘Get ‘Started’ or you can revisit the arrow for a toggle switch.

Facebook seems to be rolling out the option in waves so not everyone has it yet. If you can’t see the ‘Switch to new Facebook version’ in the settings, there are a few workarounds to getting dark mode for Facebook.

There are Google Chrome extensions, third-party apps, and some tricks that add Dark Mode to Facebook on the desktop. Please keep reading to find out how to turn on Dark Mode.

How do you get Dark Mode on Android or IOS?

Unfortunately, there is no current way to crack your Facebook app, whether it’s on the IOS or the Android, and permanently make the background black, or darker.

Until Facebook decides to roll out this feature, you can enable it on the desktop permanently on Google Chrome: type chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark into the address bar after the Facebook URL and Google Chrome will flag it as a dark mode.

How do you get Dark Mode on Facebook Messenger on Android or IOS?

Although there isn’t any way to change the entire app into a dark mode, there is a way to turn Facebook Messenger into a dark mode.

Step 1

Click on your profile picture on the upper left-hand corner, and you should see the page below.

Step 2

Then, find the dark mode and toggle it on.

Facebook Dark Mode on Desktop

For now, Facebook doesn’t have a built-in dark mode for its desktop or mobile app. For Mac and PC users, the quickest and probably the best way to get the Dark Mode is via a browser extension. There are numerous extensions to choose from, but Night Eye is the one that stands out.

It works on all mainstream browsers – Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Explorer. Plus, it is compatible with alternative browsers like Vivaldi, Yandex, Coc Coc, Brave, and UC.

To get the extension, click on your browser on the Night Eye website and choose your browser from the list.

Click on the option to ‘Install’ or ‘Add’ depending on your browser.

Select your language, and from there on all the websites you visit will be in the Dark Mode. Aside from the Dark Mode, you can also choose Filtered, or revert to the light mode by selecting the Normal option.

The Filtered mode is similar to Apple’s Night Shift because it softens up the contrast and gives you a warmer look overall. There is also an option to schedule Night Eye, customize the color filters, use blue light, and more. The extension is free, but there are in-app purchases, and you can get a free 3-month trial of the Pro version, no strings attached.

If you use the browser extension chrome, there is a simple way to make your facebook act in dark mode. Type chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark into the address bar after the Facebook URL and Google Chrome will flag it as a dark mode.

Keep in mind that these apps don’t let you pick and choose which websites you want to be in dark mode, and which ones you want to keep with the white background. You can turn these browser extensions on and off depending on which website you want to keep in light mode, but there isn’t a user-friendly way to mark specific websites to stay in dark mode. Until facebook enables a permanent dark mode, third party apps are your best bet for the desktop.

Once you’ve installed Night Eye, go to Facebook’s website and enjoy Dark Mode.

Dark Mode iOS 13

Fortunately, Apple is making strides towards the coveted dark mode for its users. With the introduction of iOS 13, users can now activate the feature in the settings.

Follow these steps to easily enable dark mode:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’ on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down to ‘Control Center’
  3. Tap ‘Customize Controls’
  4. Located ‘Dark Mode’ under the ‘More Controls’ list
  5. Tap the green plus sign next to the option

When you’re ready to use dark mode swipe down from the upper right-hand corner (if you don’t have a home button) or swipe up from the bottom if you do have a home button. Tap on the dark mode icon, then head back to your usual activities.

This dark mode feature may not work for all applications, but it is a promising start towards dark mode integrations.

Dark Mode for Android

Android users have had a dark mode feature for some time now. It only works for Android systems like the settings app. To turn the feature on:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’ on your phone
  2. Tap on ‘Display’
  3. Tap on Dark Mode

That’s all there is to it. This doesn’t really help with the Facebook app on your phone, but it is another way to ease the strain on your eyes.

Dark Is the New Black

Shortly, you won’t need any extensions, third-party apps, or special tricks to enable the Dark Mode on Facebook or anywhere else. The reason is that that many people are just finding dark mode more pleasant and reduces eye strain, a common problem for people who spend many hours each day looking at screens of various sorts.

Some expected the feature would roll out with the latest Facebook update, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Until it does, you’ll have to make do with what’s available.

What if I still don’t have the option for the new Facebook version?

If you still don’t see the option to switch to the new Facebook, you’ll have to use one of the methods above such as Night Eye.

Does Night Eye work for other social media sites too?

Yes, you can set Night Eye to display any webpage in Dark Mode. Just beware, apps like TikTok and Snapchat do not offer full functionality on the desktop versions.

When is Facebook releasing the update to everyone?

Unfortunately, the company still has not announced any information for a release to those who haven’t already received it. The only way to check for New Facebook appears to be by visiting the website and clicking on the drop-down menu. If the option to switch your version doesn’t appear that means you don’t have it yet.

So you are promoting an app that requires you to put your username and password for Facebook? This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen all day. And I work for the government.

Turning on dark mode in the iPhone settings doesn’t change Facebook to dark mode. That’s the whole reason I even looked this up was because that didn’t alter it.

“ Facebook recently announced that it will be rolling out the Dark Mode feature on the main app. But as of this writing, it hasn’t come out yet. ”
