How To Manage and Hide your Profile in Hinge

Hinge is still a pretender to the Tinder throne but is growing fast. Having been around for years, this dating app does things a little differently. It’s still a dating app. It is still all about the pics and profile but there is a little more to it. If you’re new to the app, this tutorial will walk you through how to manage and hide your profile in Hinge.

Hinge is different to Tinder in a few fundamental ways. It has a smaller audience, for now. It is cheap to use and can use your Facebook profile to create your dating one or you can create it yourself. It’s also more about the meet than endless chatting on the phone. Finally, it uses connections to help match you with someone. The app concentrates on mutual friends and connections in Facebook to get you a match.

Hinge works in two ways. Use Facebook and you are presented with Facebook friends or friends of friends. Don’t use Facebook and you are presented with dates according to filters you set.

The premise is actually pretty good. It matches you with Facebook friends or friends of friends. In theory, this avoids many of those awful dates with randoms where you have nothing in common. The downside is that if you thought a Facebook friend or connection was worth investigating you would likely have done it already.

Go the other way, by not using Facebook and Hinge is a more standard dating app.

Using Hinge

You can use an established Facebook profile to make Hinge work or you can create your own profile from scratch. The Facebook way harvests data from Facebook including school, job, friends and so on and creates your dating profile. You have some control over this and can hide some information but you cannot change any of the data once uploaded your Hinge profile.

Otherwise, don’t use Facebook to create your account and use your phone number instead. Then you can create your dating profile yourself just like any other dating app.

Hinge can also use Facebook photos for your dating profile so make sure you have uploaded some good ones. Again, once added to Hinge, you cannot delete or modify them. Or you can add your own. You’re allowed six images and are required to use six. It’s part of the design of the app.

Manage your Hinge profile

Hinge had a similar model to Tinder in that the basic app was free and had a subscription model for extra features. That changed with the redesign and is now $7 a month after a 90 day free trial. It is available for iOS and Android and you sign up with your Facebook account or phone number.

You are required to upload six good quality images and fill out some information to let the app know about you and what you’re looking for. You can add details such as religion, political views, family plans, and vices to let people know about you. You then get the opportunity to set the age, distance, ethnicity and religion of your desired match to help the app find you dates.

Hinge Profile Prompts

One unique way Hinge tries to be different is in Profile Prompts. These help you complete your profile and you can use three to create your profile. They include things like ‘The award I should be nominated for is…’, ‘I’m actually legitimately bad at…’ or ‘The dorkiest thing about me is…’ They are ideas to get you started on creating your profile. They can even take the place of the profile entirely if you want.

They are simple and there are dozens of these prompts. They help you create a different dating bio than usual and can get your creative side going.

Hide your Hinge profile

If you found someone special and want to pause your Hinge activity, that’s slightly more difficult than it should be. As far as I know, you cannot pause your account or hide your profile on Hinge. Instead, you have to either delete your profile or set your location to Greenland or Antarctica where nobody will find you.

It’s a small thing but an important omission. Hinge is all about you getting off the app and meeting in real life but doesn’t allow you to pause your account to do that. Not that I could find anyway.

Hinge tries to be different and in many ways it succeeds. It realizes that dating apps aren’t the answer, merely the gateway and tries to work in that way. Hinge knows it’s only job is the introduction and then it should get out of the way and let you meet in person. It even suggests things you have in common that would make a good place to have a date.

Along with Bumble, Hinge has taken the basic dating app and gone in another direction. It’s a credible option and whether you use the Facebook option or not, there are key differences you will either love or hate. I happen to like it and wish it every success!
