What To Do if your Kik Messages Get Stuck on D for Delivered
Like many chat apps Kik tries to keep things as simple as possible and let you know exactly what is going on and when. It has three message status markers, S, D and R that appear once you have sent a message. It is these markers that let you know what is going on and whether the person you’re chatting to has received and read your message or not. But what happens when something goes wrong? What to do if your Kik messages get stuck on D for Delivered for example?
The three message status used by Kik are: ‘S’ for Sent. This tells you that the message has been sent to the Kik server. Next is ‘D’ for Delivered. This tells you that the Kik server has forwarded your message to the recipient and has been delivered to their phone. A light D means the message has been delivered but the Kik app is not open. A darker D means the message has been delivered to an open Kik app. The ‘R’ status means the recipient has read that message.
If you see three dots instead of one of these status markers, it means your phone and the Kik app cannot establish a connection with the Kik server. As soon as that connection has been made, the status should change to S for Sent.
Kik message stuck on S for Sent
If your message is stuck on S for Sent, this usually means the recipient has either turned their phone off, is out of coverage, has logged out of Kik or has deactivated their Kik account. There are lots of reasons for this as you can imagine so there is no need to panic or think anything is wrong. Not yet anyway.
Kik uses push messaging and does not keep the messages on its server. That means if the server cannot contact the recipient’s phone, it cannot count the message as delivered. The server will retry regularly until it has successfully delivered the message.
Kik messages stuck on D for Delivered
If your Kik messages get stuck on D for Delivered, it can mean one of a few things. As mentioned, a light D means the message has been delivered to the phone but the Kik app has not yet acknowledged receipt. This could be because the recipient has shut down the Kik app or is not using their phone. A darker D means the message has been received by the Kik app but not yet read.
Why would a message get stuck on D? There are a couple of reasons for this. The recipient may be too busy to check Kik. They may be at work, school or somewhere they cannot use their phone. This is the most likely scenario for most of us.
Alternatively, a message stuck on D can also mean the person has seen the message but doesn’t want to read it. They may be ignoring you or not want to engage with you for whatever reason.
It can also mean they have blocked you. Kik does not notify you if someone blocks you in order to avoid any social awkwardness. Instead, any messages you send to that person will sit at D for Delivered and never change. It is one of the primary ways you can tell if someone blocked you on Kik or not, by a message sitting at D. It is not definitive by any stretch of the imagination but in the absence of other notifications it’s the best we have.
Kik messages stuck on R for Read
When a Kik message shows R for Read, it means the recipient’s Kik app has received and acknowledged the message you sent and the person has read that message. It is a read receipt just like you get on email. A message doesn’t get stuck at R status, a Kik user chooses to leave it there.
If your message is showing as R for a protracted amount of time, it is because the recipient does not want to reply or cannot reply at that time. This isn’t necessarily bad as there are many reasons why someone cannot reply right away. They may be at work, in class, busy with something or just not in the mood at that moment.
There are physical reasons why a message has not been replied to and there are other reasons. Just because someone has not read or replied to your messages in a while does not necessarily mean they are ignoring you or have blocked you. Real life happens and as much as we might hate it, sometimes we just have to wait. If all else fails, just call the person and ask them what’s going on. Sometimes it’s good to reach out and just talk.
