However, in order to overcome the boundaries that every trending social media app encounters, Instagram had to introduce the chat feature. Instead of having to copy a link to a photo in order to send it to someone, Instagram users have for years now been able to use the in-app instant messaging method. Here’s more about it.

Why Use the Direct Messaging Option on Instagram

Instagram is a picture-based social media app, right? Its main things are photos and visual content, in general, so why the seemingly overburdening chat option? Well, the answer is fairly simple – you’d want to send a certain picture to one of your friends, right? With Instagram’s direct messaging feature, this isn’t only possible, but made really, really, easy and straightforward.

The instant messaging feature on Instagram has, in fact, turned out to be a huge success, despite the fact that it was initially met with shaking heads and general skepticism. Instagram has time and time again proven to the online community that they know what they’re doing and this instance is no exception.

The Basic Message

The Instagram instant messaging feature pretty much looks and works like any other instant messaging platform. You enter the feature, choose the recipient, and communicate with them. To do so, simply open the Instagram app, navigate to the Airplane icon in the top-right corner, tap it, and you’ll access the chat feature. You’ll see a list of previous messages and your general communication history. Simply tap on one of the chat instances and you can start chatting.

Your recipient will receive a notification about a message and the message in itself can be used as any other chat application. Yes, you can send images from your phone and links, although you won’t be able to send other files via the app. To send a picture from your phone’s memory, tap the Image icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen, pick an image, and tap Send.

To take a picture and send it to your recipient, tap the Camera icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, take a picture, and you’ll be able to choose how much it will be visible. There are VIEW ONCE, ALLOW REPLAY, and KEEP IN CHAT options. The first one will allow your recipient to see it only once before being deleted, the second one will allow them to replay it once, while the third option will leave the picture in the chat, as any other chat app would.

The Post/Story Message

It’s true, Instagram posts and stories are pretty much either pictures or videos. However, they work differently than the photos you send directly in a chat with someone. As you’re sending a post or a story, not just the content that they represent.

To do so, navigate to the post or story that you want to send. If it’s a post, you’ll see the Airplane icon (like the one in the upper-right corner of the screen). Tap it and select the person(s) that you want to send the post to. If you want to send a story, you’ll see the same Airplane icon in the lower-right corner of the story screen. Tap it and select the person(s) you want to send it to.

Keep in mind that if the account where you found the post/story in question is private, your recipient is going to have to be approved as a follower by said account. Instagram will automatically notify you of this when choosing your recipients.

Replying to a Story

When scrolling through stories, you’re going to see a Message [account name] button towards the bottom of the screen. Tap here, select one of the offered quick reactions, or type a message and tap Send if you want to reply to their story. The person will be notified of this and your reply will remain visible, even when the story gets automatically deleted after 24 hours.

From the Account Page

If you happen to stumble upon an interesting post on your feed and follow the account link to see what they have to offer, content-wise, you can message them from their account screen. Whatever the reason is for you hanging at somebody’s profile, you can easily navigate to the Message button in the mid-right part of the screen and a chat window with the account in question will be automatically opened.

This might not be the most simple and straightforward way to contact someone, but Instagram has made this easy, just in case you want to message someone’s profile directly, after looking at their content. It may not seem like you’re going to be using this function, but it is more convenient than you’d think.
