Snapchat Filters Not Working – Here’s What to Do

There’s plenty to love about Snapchat, but one of our favorites is the availability to use filters. If you’re on Snapchat, you’ve probably goofed around with your friends, swapping faces, or adding bunny ears to your images. However, some users have been reporting problems with their Snapchat filters and lenses.

Last year an update was the reason for Snapchat filter woes. After the company realized this mistake it quickly released another update to correct the problem. The company has recently released an update which changed the way you can access the filters. However, if you are still experiencing Snapchat filter problems, here is what you need to do to ensure that you can continue goofing around with your besties.

Update Your Device

Snapchat filters might not appear within the app if you are running an outdated version of the software. Older versions of your phone’s software and newer versions of Snapchat will not work well together and vise versa. This issue affects both Android and iOS users and a simple software update is one of the quickest ways to solve this problem.

If you are on an iOS device, you have to do the following to initiate the software update:

Settings > General > Software Update

In case there are any pending updates, they will show up in the Software Update window. The Settings app itself will also indicate a pending update displayed inside a red circle on the app. After you finish updating your device, launch Snapchat to see whether you can use the filters.

If you are using an Android device do this:

Settings > Software Update > Check for Updates > Tap ‘Ok’ > Install Update if one is available.

OR

Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update

Depending on the version one of the two options above will lead you to the latest version of Android if you don’t already have it.

Once the software is up-to-date on either model; check to see if your Snapchat filters are working. If not, continue following the steps listed below.

Update Snapchat

Your mobile device might not be the only thing that needs updating. As previously mentioned, Snapchat issues have been fixed by updates in the past. You should know that most of the Snapchat updates are monthly, so keeping up with the latest ones is essential to running the app trouble-free.

For our Android users, check out the Google Play Store to see if you are using the latest version of Snapchat. – Once in the Google Play Store you can either type “Snapchat” in the search bar or tap the “Updates” option at the top.

The same goes for iOS users, only they will need to check the App Store for new Snapchat versions. – From the App Store tap “Updates” on the lower right-hand side. Scroll to Snapchat and tap “Update.”

Activating Snapchat Filters

If you still can’t access the filters after performing all the necessary updates, there is a possibility that they are deactivated within the Snapchat app itself. This is only an option on iPhones.

Here is how to activate the filters:

1. Launch Snapchat. Tap on the Snapchat app to launch it, then tap on your profile in the upper-left corner.

2. Select Settings

Access the Settings menu by tapping on the red icon in the upper-right corner.

3. Access Additional Services

Choose the Manage option under Additional Services to get more actions. In the Manage menu, make sure that the “Filters” option is toggled on. If it is not, just tap on the button to enable the filters.

After you toggle the filters on, go back to the main Snapchat window and check whether you can use them.

Other Reasons Why You Cannot Use Snapchat Filters

You should know that only a handful of Snapchat filters are permanent. In most cases, the company introduces new filters every few days or weeks. So if you are looking for a particular filter and it is not there, the problem is not software-related – the filter is just no longer available.

There were some really cool promotional filters featuring the likes of Superman, Deadpool, and Batman, to name a few, but they were only temporarily available to coincide with the theatrical releases of their respective movies.

Your Phone is Running too Slow

If you’re using an Android device it may be bogged down which doesn’t allow the filters to focus – if this is happening you can clear your system cache. Android phones also have an external storage device. Ensure that your Snapchat app is stored in the system’s memory and not an external SD card.

You can clear the cache in the Settings of an iPhone under the Safari option. You’ll also want to make sure that your phone’s device memory isn’t full. If you’re getting messages that you’re out of space this can cause your phone to run slow.

Your Internet Connection is Poor

Whether you’re using cellular data or wifi if your phone’s connection isn’t fast enough – you may experience issues with Snapchat filters. Try these options:

  1. Turn off wifi if it is on
  2. Enter a wifi space if your cell phone data connection is weak
  3. Reset your network settings in the iPhone or Android settings

Turn on Location Services

Some filters only work in certain locations – From the main screen of the app tap the location indicator in the lower left-hand corner then tap ‘Allow.’

Check Your Lighting

If the issue is ongoing this is likely not the issue but you should make sure you’re in a well-lit area. Cleaning your front and rear camera lens may be affecting the lighting, make sure it’s clean and free of any obstructions such as a case or screen protector.

Camera Issues

If you camera is not working properly you’ll need to get it fixed or replaced – the way to diagnose this for certain is if your camera does not work using the system’s camera app and in Snapchat.

Snapchat Lenses Issues

Besides filter problems, issues with Snapchat lenses are also surprisingly common. One of the main reasons you are not able to use some or all of the lenses is the technical requirements. If you are running Snapchat on an older device, it might not support base requirements for Snapchat lenses.

Unlike filters, Snapchat lenses include animation and facial recognition features which might be a bit overpowering for some older devices. You can always check the Snapchat website for basic technical requirements that allow you to use lenses.

An Extra Filter Tip

There is a possibility that you don’t need to update the app or your device, but just do a simple restart to get your favorite Snapchat filters back. Your mobile device might freeze or experience some other temporary hardware issue, which could end up causing problems with Snapchat.

Turning your phone off and then back on should be enough to fix this problem.

The Final Filter

There is no need to worry if you realize that the filters on your Snapchat are gone. The methods listed above should help you get the filters back in no time. Also, keep in mind that you should run regular software updates to ensure that your Snapchat runs smoothly.

I’m having issues with my filters too! The voices stopped working 2 days ago and I can’t seem to fix it. Everything is updated, software, snapchat app, I rebooted my phone several times, uninstalled and re-installed snapchat.. still nothing! My sister has a samsung as well and hers is fine. I have the samsung galaxy A5. ‍♀️

The voice changing filters in my snap chat don’t work. The actual picture does, but it doesn’t change my voice if recording it worked 2 days ago. ???

none of my filters are working. I contacted them and got a irrelevant answer. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. I did everything it tells you to do to troubleshoot and still nothing. I have a newer phone that is updated and so is the app.

Same problem here. Cute voices stopped working yesterday. I’m hoping Snapchat will issue an update soon so it will fix all of our phones. I have a Samsung, not sure if this is happening to Apple users, trying to contact some friends and find out.

I have an android version 6.0.1 and I can’t get any of the filters that have to “find my face” to work. The ones with ears or glasses just pop up as soon as I click on them. I’ve deleted the app and loaded it again so it’s the most current version of Snapchat. I can’t figure it out and everything I’ve found online tells me to go into Manage and make sure Filters is toggled on. I don’t have “Filters” in Manage. The only thing in there is Lens Studio. If I click on that it tells me that Lens Studio is unpaired and to scan the Lens Studio Snapcode to pair Snapchat and preview the Lenses that I create.

I haven’t been able to have filters with voices please if someone already fixed let me know. I have a Google pixel 3. Everything has been updated. I deleted the app like 5 times. Turned off and on my phone and it still doesn’t work.
Avatar Jay says:
Agreed. Under Manage it just has one option. This never happened until I switched to the S10 plus.

No software update in Android Settings. Now what?
Avatar Megawood84 says:
I was having the same issue, but my app was up to date. Then I realized I had just moved the snapchat app to my internal storage to the external storage/sd card. (You do this by going to the application manager in your settings) I moved it back to the internal storage and my lenses and other things worked like normal.
Avatar Christina says:
I dont have the manage button in my settings to confirm filters are enabled
Avatar me says:
yup, no manage button for me either. i don’t even have an “additional services” section.
Avatar Elizabeth says:
My rear camera lens stoped working a few days ago and I tried re downloading the app and even updating and restarting my device but nothing seems to work. When ever I click on the screen to find my face it doesn’t work, I think it’s a glitch with the app! But does anyone know a solution?
Avatar Kyle says:
I am having the same problem with the rear camera of my XS :(
