Will My Tinder Subscription Show Up on my Bank Statement?

Some things are For Your Eyes Only.  For example, it’s really no one’s business but your own what you have for lunch, where you choose to shop, or what you do with your time and money.  For some, participation on dating sites fits under that category as well.  You may wonder how you can keep your Tinder activity secret from prying eyes. Will a Tinder subscription show up as “Tinder” on a bank statement, or as something a bit more discreet? Any tips for leading a double life where you need to keep your presence on Tinder a secret?

It turns out that keeping a Tinder subscription secret is a very popular concern. There are plenty of reasons why you might want to keep quiet about your Tinder participation, and besides, TechJunkie doesn’t judge, it just provides answers to questions. This piece is going to answer all of those questions.

Will My Tinder Subscription Show up on My Bank Statement?

What will show on your bank statement depends on how you purchased your Tinder subscription. Apple just shows an iTunes purchase with no details as to what it was. Google Play Store will list your purchase as “Google Play Apps,” along with the date purchased and the name of the app in your Google Pay statement.  On your credit card statement, it will present as “GOOGLE*TINDER” or something similar, depending on your bank.

You can make purchases directly through Tinder.com using your credit card.  This will appear loud and proud on your credit card statements; however, if you have a secret credit card, it’s possible that no one but you will ever see these charges.

How Can I Keep My Tinder Activity Secret?

This question and ‘Any tips for leading a double life while on Tinder?’ are very similar so we’ll combine them into a single question about using Tinder privately, or as privately as possible. Here are some actionable ways to keep Tinder secret from everyone, whoever they might be.

Use Tinder without Facebook

While Tinder doesn’t share to your Facebook account, having at least one degree of separation between your two lives is key to maintaining them both. Now Tinder allows you do have an account without Facebook, this is definitely the way to go. You will need a burner phone or SIM for this to work, but if you’ve got a secret Tinder, what’s a secret phone or phone number to boot?

Select “Log in with phone number” on the main Tinder page , and you can create a new profile with your burner phone. This does mean you will have to manually create your profile and upload images, but that gives you time to really consider how you’re going to represent yourself on Tinder. If you’re secretly using Tinder, you don’t want to use anything that links one life to the other life. Leading a “double life” means keeping the two lives separate in every way possible, including with regard to social media.

Alternatively, creating an entirely new Facebook account with a new persona is a possibility for those who have the time and inclination to go that far.

Creating a New You

You have to be careful when creating a new persona. You have to make this new person different enough to be safely separate but similar enough so you can remember it. It needs to be distinct enough that someone who knows you and comes across your profile on Tinder won’t immediately recognize you. It needs to be recognizable enough that you don’t get caught in a lie or have to invent an entire new universe around this new persona.

There are a few things you can do to keep each side of your story straight.  For example, you may wish to create a name similar to your own but different enough to be unrecognizable as you to those who know you well. If your name is “Ryker,” you might go by something similar, yet less distinctive, like “Ryan.” Never use your real last name; a middle name is often a good choice for a pseudonym. Create a fake address (but one that actually exists- Post Office Boxes or mail centers are ideal), a new email address that only you can guess the password to, and perhaps even social media accounts under your new identity. Again, keep it as similar as possible while also being different.

Take a series of photos to use on your profile which will reflect your backstory. If you want to become a thoroughly different version of yourself, you’re going to have to create the character from the ground up.  Think about how that kind of person would look, what they would wear, where they would pose and so on. They should be very similar to your real personality but again, different enough. The key is to be close enough to the real you that it’s not unsettling to your Tinder dates, yet different enough from the real you to.

This can be a fine and stressful line to tread, and may have some serious social and psychological impacts.  Again, we’re not judging, but if you’re willing to invent an entirely new version of yourself, perhaps you may wish to consider why you’re not just living this version of yourself.  The last thing we want to do is encourage anyone to fall down a Frank Abagnale rabbit hole of existence!

Use a Prepaid Credit Card or Gift Card

As we mentioned briefly in the original question, one way for Tinder to not appear on a bank statement that someone else might see is to link a gift card, prepaid card or a private credit card to your iTunes or Google Play account. That way it doesn’t matter what appears on the statement as no one will know.  Just be sure that no one else has the log on information to your iTunes or Google Play account, and keep the gift card, prepaid card, or private card well hidden. This is a great way to sidestep the issue of having to explain line items on your normal credit card bills.

Don’t Use the App on Your Main Phone

Even if nobody else has access to your main phone, don’t install Tinder on it. All it takes is leaving the phone unlocked at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and the jig is up.  Use your burner phone or the browser version of Tinder. If you use your browser, use Incognito Mode to make sure you leave no tracks. A burner phone is useful as you can also swipe while out of the house. How you manage this is up to you as long as you don’t install the app on the phone everyone knows about.

Be Careful of Your Location

Ever heard of the term ‘Don’t s**t where you sleep?’ This is one of those times. If you live in a small town, don’t set your Tinder location there. The law of averages requires that someone you know in your small town will find you, recognize you, and start the gossip train about your Tinder participation. The likelihood is slightly less for those who live in big cities, but be mindful of how easy you are to track if someone does come across your profile and gets curious. Not using your Tinder profile in your local area is especially critical if you don’t live in a large city.

It may mean a bit of driving between dates, but keeping your two lives separate has to be worth the effort right?

Prepaid Visa card doesn’t work because tinder requires recurring payments. I just tried it. I’m surprised Tinder isn’t more discrete
