How To Block Someone on WeChat without Notifying Them

WeChat is a Chinese chat app that apparently counts its users by the billion. Yep, the billion. As of last year, WeChat had one billion active monthly users with the number growing slowly but steadily each month. That’s a huge number. With such a number comes the usual social problems so today we are going to cover how to block someone on WeChat without notifying them.

Even though WeChat is Chinese and was designed for Chinese users, it has a global user base. It is used everywhere and is gaining ground on WhatsApp who has around 1.5 billion active monthly users. In China, WeChat is known as Weixin and is much a part of their life as WhatsApp is ours.

With any social network, you get the same range of user types. Oversharers, self-promoters, narcissists, fakes, scammers and a few normal people too. Some of these are going to be bearable and some are not so knowing how to block someone on WeChat is essential to your survival as with any social network.

How to block someone on WeChat

From my own experiments, I found that WeChat does not notify someone that you block them but they can find out if they want to. Like most social networks, there is no active notification that you have been blocked as that can have negative repercussions for the blocker and the network in general. However, if someone suspects, it doesn’t take much effort to find out.

Blocking someone on WeChat is simple.

On iPhone, do this:

  1. Open WeChat and select Contacts.
  2. Select the profile of the person you want to block.
  3. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right of their profile.
  4. Select Profile Settings and toggle Block to on.

If you just want to see a little less of them, you also have the option to Hide their Moments or to not share your own Moments. If they are just an oversharer or post way too much, this might be a better option.

On Android, do this:

  1. Open WeChat and select Contacts.
  2. Select the profile of the person you want to block.
  3. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right of their profile.
  4. Select Block from the slider menu.
  5. Confirm by selecting OK.

You can also select the person’s profile from within a chat or from a post. You don’t have to use Contacts. If you just want to block their Moments or stop them seeing yours, you need to select Moment Options from their profile in the same way you accessed the Block option.

Are blocked contacts notified in WeChat?

As mentioned, I was not notified when someone blocked me during my experiments. It was simple to find out if I had been blocked though. For one, I stopped seeing posts from the person who blocked me which immediately raised suspicions. All I then had to do was go to their profile and look at their latest posts. I couldn’t see any of their new updates or Moments so I knew I had been blocked. I was able to confirm this with my colleague as we were experimenting but it doesn’t take a genius to work it out.

The next best way to find out if you have been blocked on WeChat is to send a message. If you send one and see a message rejection notification, you have been blocked.

There are others way to check if you have been blocked in WeChat too. Try initiating a group chat with the person. As they will still be in your Contacts, you can try to start a group chat with them. If you cannot see their Moments but they join the chat, you’re blocked.

If you use Walking Steps in WeChat, you can apparently tell there too. I don’t use that feature but if you suddenly stop seeing their Walking Steps updates and they are still using the app as far as you know, you’re blocked.

There may be other ways to find out if you have been block on WeChat but those are the ones I know of. If you find you have been blocked, it might be a good time for some self-reflection to understand why or time to move on and find some new friends. It isn’t always personal. Sometimes people just block because they feel like it or because they can. It’s part of the ‘charm’ of social media and something we all have to get used to.

That’s how to block someone on WeChat without notifying them. Know of any other ways to tell if someone has blocked you? Know any way around it? Tell us about it below if you do!
